Basir Syndrome

          Basir Syndrom

          (Chutar Chiki)

          [Unhealthy Colon, Colon Disease]

Basir is a Hausa term used to describe a syndrome that from “fil azim” has been associated with a temperamental imbalance in the digestive tract which manifests many symptoms and paves way for a good number of opportunistic dieses.

The gastrointestinal tract [alimentary canal or digestive tract] is part of the digestive system.

The gastrointestinal tract is made up of organs classified as of cool temperament, food and liquid travel through when they are swallowed, then digested, absorbed and leave the body as faeces.

These include Baki [the mouth], Makogoro [pharynx (throat)], oesophagus, Chiki [stomach], Hanji [small intestine, large intestine], rectum and tubura [anus].

The digestive system can be divided into the digestive tract and associated digestive organs (salivary glands, pancreas, liver and gallbladder)

Stomach digests food by acidification and the breakdown of proteins.

Small intestine further digestion of food and nutrient absorption.

Large intestine (Colon) absorbs water and consolidates the faecal mass.

While in aliphatic medicine these symptoms are linked to the colon and in some instances the pancreas [Matsarmama] in traditional African medicine it is seen, understood and treated as an ailment of the GIT.
