Chiwon Sanyi – (Toilet and STD Infections)

Many a time we find men and women with fertility related issues that have been linked to a number of STD infections, locally called Chiwon Sanyi in Hausa, sometimes these infections for some reason or the other stay below the general lab tests radar.

The thought of contracting a sexually transmitted disease sends shivers of fear in all, in traditional African medicine the various diseases in this class are called Chiwon Sanyi.

Chiwon Sanyi, its visible and feel able symptoms coupled with answers given to questions from the Herbalist or Holistic Health Care Doctor would direct to the cure, cause and type of infection.

Although relatively common, Chiwon Sanyi should be taken seriously, this “taken seriously” is a stance taken by traditional medicine practitioners as they see its potential causative damage to the various body organs classified as having the attribute of Sanyi, these include the Kidney, Lungs, Reproductive organs and the brain amongst others the skin is also linked to the kidney and thus classified as Sanyi related in traditional African Medicine.

Sometimes the stress related to finding out one has what can be described as Chiwon Sanyi can be devastating and has ended many marriages to say the least.

Chiwon Sanyi is divided into two major groups, na Mata (of/for women) and na Maza (of/for men)

This is basically because over time (long before orthodox medicine) it has been seen that the cause of some of the ailments can be non-sexual most especially in women and the effects short and long term are different for both.

This has brought a borrowed term “toilet infection” to the vocabulary of the traditional medicine practice, this term has saved many a marriage, for it healed the suspicious hearts while affirming the old-time knowledge that many an infection that affect the woman’s private parts could come from its exposure to contamination from use of unhygienic toilets, unhygienic practices, type of underwear and hormone imbalance amongst others.

Failure to keep the old practice of wiping from front to back after pooing, use of water to wash after pooing, use of water to wash after peeing, all these have their effect on the virginal health of a woman.

There is no disease without a cure, you either know it or you don’t, this is from the root of Islamic Medicine as related in the Al Masnad (by Imam Ahmad) that Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “Allah has not Sent down a disease except that He Sent down its cure; whoever knows it (the cure), knows it, and whoever is unaware of it (the cure), ha is unaware of it (the medicine), while those who are ignorant of it are unaware of it.” [Al-Nasaii, Ibn Majah, Al-Hakim and Ibn Hibban].

Yes, it can be demanding financially when it comes to treatment, however herbal medicine is much cheaper and healthier than orthodox medicines considering side effects. More the multi effect of various herbs fortify and improve the body’s immune and defence system while treating the ailment.

Poor handling of and treatment of Chiwon Sanyi can lead to serious health issues and complications in future least of which could be infertility.

The elimination or containment of the cause is key and of utmost importance, be it physical, hygiene related or “Mijin Dare” related. The Mijin dare factor is a whole semester load on its own, as it has been linked to many ailments physical and mental.

Chiwon Sanyi, when just called so can cover and include, urinary tract infection, Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Hepatitis, Syphilis, HIV/AIDS, Yeast infection, Genital Herps, Crabs, Urinary Tract infections, but limited to them.

Otherwise a pointer is given to indicate type or location, as in chiwon sanyin kashi (rheumatism), chiwon sanyin gabba and so on.
